The Bindings

Whether binding a new book or rebinding an old one, Andrew uses the best quality materials available and employs traditional hand-binding techniques, as used by bookbinding craftsmen for centuries.

Features of Andrew's bindings include:

  • all covers constructed from acid-free high density millboard
  • archival quality vegetable-tanned calf or goatskin bookbinding leathers, often hand-dyed in house
  • hand-marbled papers used in endpapers and sidings
  • hand-sewn silk endbands
  • page edges gilded where appropriate
  • text blocks re-sewn where existing sewing failed or weak
  • all titling and decoration undertaken by hand using traditional gold tooling methods and 23 carat English gold leaf. See Gold Finishing.
